REFERENCES

Peter Jonas worked at Kingsmead school, a large community school in Enfield, North London from 2002-2007.  He worked in Learning Support and taught Resistant Materials and Graphics as well as Citizenship.  In addition he led a number of mural painting projects involving groups of students which lifted the visual environment significantly.  His art skills were also significant contributors to a number of theatre productions.

Peter’s rapport with young people, particularly disaffected young people, is an area of outstanding strength. He engages confidence and secures their long-term commitment to projects.  This is evident in his classroom practice and his extended-curricular work.

The mural projects have included two significant pieces in the Arts building; one links the stairwells on three floors moving from Music via Drama and Media to Art with a series of well chosen representations; the other along the Drama and Media corridor includes a number of iconic figures from the world of theatre and film including Sir Cliff Richard who signed the likeness at an event celebrating the school’s achievement of Performing and Visual Arts specialist status.  A sterile corridor connecting the gyms to the back of the stage has been transformed by a mural depicting sporting endeavour.  The Geography and History blocks have large circulation areas which again have been transformed as a result of Peter’s work – they provide an important visual context to study in these areas.

Peter’s contributions to school productions represent long-term commitment to large-scale creative projects involving many hours of work beyond the school day and the co-ordination of teams of volunteers.  Highly effective backdrops and Stage Sets for Little shop of Horrors, My Fair Lady and The Wizard of Oz are highlights from recent years.
